When Worship Becomes More Than Just a Task

There she was, diligently working on transcribing worship lyrics into the slides. A routine task, something she had done countless times before. But on this particular day, something was different. As she typed each word, aligning the text to fit the screen perfectly, she felt the Holy Spirit speak to her. It wasn’t just another set of lyrics. These were words of worship—words that carried the weight of God’s presence.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she suddenly became overwhelmed by the goodness of God. The simple task of preparing slides became a sacred moment, a personal encounter with Him. And in that moment, she recognized His voice with undeniable clarity. What seemed like an ordinary responsibility turned into an extraordinary experience of God’s presence.

Pearl’s story is a powerful reminder to all of us who serve in worship ministry—or any ministry, for that matter. It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of excellence in skill, in craft, in performance. We spend hours refining our abilities, rehearsing, and making sure everything runs smoothly. But true excellence is not just about flawless execution. It is about having an open heart, ready to experience God even in the midst of our doing.

Ministry is never just about tasks. It is about encounters. And worship is never just about the music, the slides, or the technical perfection—it’s about being in His presence. Her story challenges us to approach our ministry with a heart that is sensitive to God’s voice. Because in the end, what truly matters is not just what we do for God, but what we allow Him to do in us as we serve.

May we never be so focused on the work of worship that we forget the One we worship. May we always be open to His voice, even in the smallest details of our service. Because it is in those moments—unexpected and unscripted—that He reveals His glory in the most personal way.
